5/28/2023 0 Comments Tanner museThe hybrid defender had a solid collegiate career, at least statistically. In all likelihood, if Muse is healthy, new Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley will make use of him. Looks like Muse will be ready to make an impact for the Raiders… The latter being the key, is he a safety or a linebacker? Joe Marino of The Draft Network originally believed Muse needed to make the transition to weakside linebacker in the NFL. He literally took zero snaps in 2020, battling a toe injury all while trying to make the NFL transition. First, Muse has to show he can stay healthy for a full season. Nevertheless, the team has to live with Muse and will do everything in their power to make sure he can live up to expectations. In retrospect, they could’ve selected promising defensive lineman Alex Highsmith, that’s just one example of an alternate scenario. Muse’s selection was immediately chastised as a reach, basically, the Raiders over-drafted ’55’ in the third round. Muse, who was selected with the 100th overall pick in the third round, is in the same boat. Taking both Henry Ruggs III and Damon Arnette when Justin Jefferson and CeeDee Lamb were available last year could end up haunting Las Vegas. Selecting prospects is often a crapshoot but the organization has really struck out recently. The Raiders have been off the mark when it comes to their draft picks these past couple of years. Fast forward a year and he’s yet to have shown he was worthy of his selection. For those keeping track, the Raiders have wasted four third-round picks in three seasons. One of the most bemusing draft selections for the Las Vegas Raiders last year was Clemson’s Tanner Muse. Last year, the Raiders traded third-round pick Lynn Bowden to the Miami Dolphins after it was clear he wasn’t what they thought he was. Everybody knows how that story ended as Brown never even played for the team. The following year, the Raiders sent the Steelers another third-round pick as part of the Antonio Brown trade. He had 19 catches for 266 yards and only played in eight games for the team. In Jon Gruden’s first year with the team, they sent a third-rounder to the Pittsburgh Steelers for wide receiver Martavis Bryant. Muse joins a long list of wasted third-round picks by the Raiders in recent years. However, it’s hard to imagine he does clear waivers as there was probably at least one other team out there that liked him coming out of the draft. If he ends up clearing waivers, the Raiders almost have to try and get him on the practice squad to at least save a bit of face. It simply makes no sense for them to give up on him now considering the investment of a high draft pick. Muse is athletically gifted as he ran a 4.41 40-yard dash at the combine. He even referred to himself as a “ special teams war daddy.” He must’ve looked really bad to defensive coordinator Gus Bradley for them to let him go now. He projected to be a special teams ace and not much more. Now, picking him in the third round was always a bad pick. There are no character concerns with Muse so the team can’t use that as an excuse. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to cut a former third-round pick who hasn’t even played in a game. Wright, Muse’s role would’ve mostly just been on special teams.ĪLL the latest Raiders news straight to your inbox! He had some strong moments in the preseason but did struggle in the last game. He struggled with that transition last year but was seen taking starter reps throughout training camp. Muse was a safety at Clemson but the Raiders wanted him to transition to linebacker. The 2020 third-round pick hasn’t even played in a game yet after missing his rookie year with a toe injury. Missed his entire rookie season because of a toe injury, but took starter reps throughout camp and was a core special teamer. Muse was a third-round pick out of Clemson in 2020.
